Ma’an Network TV/Radio Programs: Overview

Anti

The new weekly program “Anti” (Arabic for “you”) was launched in June 2012, with generous support from the Arab Human Rights Fund. “Anti” is a participatory, live television program, broadcast via Ma’an Mix satellite channel. Ma’an Network will produce 10 episodes, each focusing on issues affecting women, paying particular attention to how the complex legal system and application of laws impact on women.

Mock Court Program

With generous funds from the Palestinian Justice Enhancement Program (PJEP), Ma’an Network has begun producing  an engaging court room television series that will provide viewers with quality information about the justice system in the West Bank. A total of 13 episodes, each one hour in duration, will be produced throughout the life of the project. The program will be based in a court room and will feature practicing judges and lawyers with significant legal experience playing the role of legal professionals. Legal cases featured throughout the program highlight topics such as drug abuse, violence against women, women’s inheritance rights, rape, bribery, corruption, honor killings, land disputes, theft and fraud.

Educational Contemplations

A program which reflects on the Ministry of Education and the educational system in the oPt . This studio program brings together guests from Gaza and the West Bank to discuss issues such as quality of teachers and curricula . Vox pops interviews are a regular part of the program enabling viewers an opportunity to convey their opinion on topics discussed throughout the program.

Palestine this Evening

News program looking at problems of Palestinian society in general, who “did not make it” to the news bulletin at 8pm. Different people present the program. Palestine this evening is like a magazine and presents a socio-political perspective on society. It is broadcasted every evening at 6 pm.

News Bulletin

A livestudio news program reporting the headlines in Palestine and the region. The capacity to facilitate live simultaneous broadcasts with television studios in Gaza, Ramallah, Hebron, Nablus and Haifa means Ma’an Network break stories as they happen. Broadcast daily, the News Bulletin is a one hour program which includes in-depth feature reports.

No Restraints

A live ministerial panel TV show (broadcast twice each month) part of the Foundation for the Future Project. The program aims to leverage the knowledge of civil society to improve media coverage concerning governance issues and to empower citizens to hold decision-makersaccountable, demand transparency and participation through critical questions directed to the various Ministers invited to the show by participating journalists.  Each episode features one Minister, who is held accountable on the policies and problems related to their Ministry.

Pay Attention

A monthly TV program, bringing public decision makers to account, in front of a live Palestinian and regional audience. This program investigates flaws in Palestinian institutions and seeks solutions to them. With each episode being issue specific, relevant Ministers and other public figures in positions of authority are invited to join the program, where they are questioned and held to account in front of the audience. Each episode  is devoted to a specific issue e.g. health issues.  The audience comprises of approximately 30 people who have the opportunity to ask questions and share their ideas and comments directly with Ministers and other invited guests.

New Star

“New Star”, the first Palestinian talent show for young singers from the West Bank, Gaza and Israel, has captivated Palestinian audiences across the region and abroad since its establishment in 2010. Hundreds of young hopefuls seeking fame have been putting their voices to the test on ‘New Star’, a program jointly-produced by Ma'an Network and Mix TV (Haifa), Israel. (New Star is the Palestinian equivalent to Arab Idol and Pop Idol shows around the world.)

Philanthropy for Palestine

A weekly program promoting philanthropy in the community, the program acts as a bridge, connecting those in need of assistance (including marginalized individuals/families, people with special needs and individuals living in poverty), and those willing to offer assistance. Through unveiling personal stories which give an insight into the lives of individuals/families, the community (including individuals, the President, the Prime Minister and other Government officials) are encouraged to offer assistance to Palestinians featured on the program.

News Package

Daily compilation of all news reports of the day. Broadcasted daily without moderation or comments.

Give and Take

A street quiz show, filmed live on the streets, produced by the Haifa studio. The program’s moderator approaches people on the street (from all ages and groups) asking them questions about politics, history and society. If people answer the questions correctly they receive a cash prize.

Mix 48

A program produced by the Haifa studio, focusing on Palestinians living in Israel. Palestinians from all tiers of society are invited to the studio to discuss issues directly relevant to their lives.

Tour Through the Hebrew Press

Nasser Lahham’s famous weekly program,  where  he translates Hebrew news into Arabic for a Palestinian audience. . Ma’an Network constantly monitors Hebrew TV channels in order to select news pieces for translation.

Goal for Palestine

A sports program focusing on football and the role of football in Palestine that goes beyond live broadcasts of football matches. All kinds of football related issues are discussed during this live program.

Our Prisoners

A new program focusing on Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons. Three reports (short feature stories) are part of each episode. Invited studio guests discuss issues relevant to prisoner’s lives. Amongst the guests are families of prisoners, Red Crescent employers, and lawyers.

Time for Songs

A music program showing highlights from the New Star program and other famous Palestinian and Arab singers.

Palestinian Inspirations

A program produced in the Haifa  studio which brings together Palestinian students (from schools and universities) to discuss their dreams regarding their future professions. The students meet working professionals to collect advice and discuss their future plans to get further inspirations on the way to reaching their goals.

Documentary Time

During this time slot, a selection of Ma’an Network produced documentaries are aired, such as the award winning documentary titled “Angels in the Doc”. Ma’an Network has produced over 20 documentaries reporting on a number of issues affecting the lives of Palestinians.

Secrets of the Horoscope

A very popular new program which enables callers from Palestine and across the region (including Jordan and Iraq) to discuss their horoscopes and ask questions directly with a horoscope expert.

Samer Raneem’s Show

A new program from Egypt’s ON TV, famous Egyptian comedian Samer Raneem invites dancers, singers and comedians to perform on the show. A popular entertainment program, the show is mixture of singing, dancing and comedy.

Competing Schools

A program which brings together students from different schools (e.g. from Bethlehem and Beit Jala) , to compete in a knowledge contest.
