Objectives:

This news production course aimed to instill newsroom staff with the basic principles of producing quality news packages to modern professional standards. The package is the mainstay of any newscast and the only way to improve news output is to enhance the content and style of the individual news packages. By bringing various groups of staff – editors, reporters, picture editors, operators and directors – into the training process, professional standards will become institutionalized across the whole team.

The first week of training combined theory and practice. It concentrated on basic craft skills including writing, package construction, interviewing on location, shooting set up sequences, chasing a breaking news story, editing action sequences, impartiality and ethics. The second week involved full news production, producing daily news packages on accurate, up-to-the-minute news stories.

Results: 

Participants researched and fixed their own stories, before shooting on location, and final production, under the supervision of trainers.
