The Ongoing Development of Independent Palestinian Television Period: June 2008 – December 2009 These shows were designed to provide a range of programming that would appeal to different sectors of the population and expand the public debate. The project was also designed to support the development of independent media in Palestine through human and technical capacity building, and most of these programs were produced in partnership with Ma'an Network’s member stations and Gaza office. Results: Ma'an Network produced and broadcast two series of Hard Questions (for a total of 48 episodes) and three other series of original productions: For Your Health, Eyes on Gaza and Our Economy.
TV programs covered under this grant: Program: Hard Questions (Al-As'ila As-Saaba) Duration: 60 minutes Presented by: Nasser Lahham, Ma'an News Agency Editor-in-Chief Aired: Mondays at 9:00pm Description: A news magazine program hosted by Nasser Lahham that looks beyond the headlines and probes news-makers and political personalities for the facts behind the news. By asking the “hard questions,” Lahham gives his Palestinian audiences access to in-depth information on the political process and decision making. With guests including prominent Palestinian and Israeli figures, Lahham delves into issues surrounding regional politics and the conflict as well as the Palestinian political scene. The format of the second series of Hard Questions included more emphasis on in-depth investigative features. Program: Our Economy (Iqtisaduna) Duration: 60 minutes Presented by: Anis Swidan Aired: Fridays at 9:00pm Description: Bringing stories of Palestinian business success, innovation and struggle to a local audience, Our Economy targets issues that affect the development of commerce and business in the region. Tapping into the expertise of professors, lawyers, businessmen/women and lawmakers, the show probes topical issues impacting economic development, presenting detailed economic information in an accessible manner. Program: Eyes on Gaza (Ayoun ala' Gaza) Duration: 60 minutes Presented by: Mona Okal Aired: Sundays at 9:00pm Description: Feature programs detailing the realities of life in the Gaza Strip. Presenting stories of pain, hope, and struggle, these documentary-style broadcasts look at the lives of citizens in Gaza. Each broadcast tackles a new issue, and traces the ways different people deal with the situation. The program has covered food shortages, post-traumatic stress, the effect of regular airstrikes on daily life, and dealing with the death of loved ones. However, the program also strives to give viewers a multi-dimensional picture of life in Gaza by focusing on the work of artists, reporters, medical professionals, teachers, and civil society organizations throughout the Strip. Program: For Your Health (Sahtak Ilak) Duration: 60 minutes Presented by: Muna Hawash Aired: Sundays at 5:00pm Description: Experts, doctors, nurses and researchers weigh in on a wide range of health issues. From treatment of childhood illnesses to preventing the spread of infections, the show is a resource and practical educational tool for households across Palestine.
