TV and Video Production

Ma'an Network began as a cooperative venture among local West Bank TV stations, and television production is still one of our major activities. Many of our television projects are designed to build the capacity of Ma'an Network member stations by including a training component and collaboration with our Bethlehem headquarters.

Ma'an Network has become an important source of quality Palestinian television, and many of our productions are broadcast on satellite channels such as Palestine TV, as well as our network stations, reaching viewers throughout the Palestinian territories and beyond.

Our television programming extends beyond news coverage to encompass a variety of genres, including talk shows, feature stories, documentaries, and drama series. In addition to providing insight into current affairs, our programs aim to expand our audience’s horizons and facilitate the exploration of new possibilities for the future.

Ma'an productions range from the first soap opera produced, acted, and directed by Palestinians, to a weekly program translating and explaining Hebrew-language media stories to Palestinian viewers. We produce talk shows where government officials and leading experts discuss public policy, serial dramas that combine entertainment with important social messages, investigative reports and features, and programs that explore Palestinian history and culture.

Our public service programming has included live broadcasts of Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) sessions, a campaign to encourage people to register for the Palestinian census, an extensive voter education campaign in the run-up to the January 2006 parliamentary elections, and live broadcasts of the elections themselves. We also regularly arrange live broadcasts of major cultural, religious and sports events in Palestine, such as football matches, performances during Ramadan, and the annual Christmas festivities in Bethlehem.

Ma'an Network has also executed contracts for major outlets such as Al-Jazeera and the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation (PBC), producing documentaries and special programs for Ramadan. We also regularly produce television advertisements for Palestinian businesses and government agencies, and have managed multi-media advertising campaigns throughout Palestine.

Recently, Ma'an has begun producing televised competitions as a way to highlight Palestinian talent. Amongst these was the first ever Palestinian university challenge, Stars, broadcast in late 2009 as part of an EC-funded project on EU-Palestinian relations. In total, 45 students from nine universities in the West Bank and Gaza answered questions on culture, art, politics and economics related to Europe with the participation of a live audience and viewers at home (via interactive media technologies developed for the show).

Finally, we are always looking for ways to promote cultural exchange through television, and cooperation with regional and international media organizations, in order to broaden the programming available to Palestinian audiences and provide opportunities for Palestinian media professionals to develop their skills and experience. Television is a medium that spans distances and barriers. Since travel remains difficult for many Palestinians, Ma'an seeks to bring the world to them by working in partnership with other television professionals and networks, while simultaneously increasing international understanding of Palestine and its people.
