TV Documentaries on Palestinian Culture

Objective:

• Informing Arab viewers about Palestinian cultural traditions

The Qatar-based satellite channel Al-Jazeera contracted Ma'an to produce two half-hour documentaries and for a program called Sha'abiyat about popular culture throughout the Arab world. Ma'an produced a documentary called Ash-Shomaliyya which explored the history and forms of dabkah, the traditional Palestinian folk dance, from different parts of Palestine, and a film called The First Secret (As-Sirr Al-Awal) on Palestinian baptism ceremonies.

 

Results:

•  Ash-Shomaliyya was broadcast on Al-Jazeera in May 2008, reaching viewers throughout the Middle East.
