Reframing Incitement in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip

Period: July 2003 - September 2004

Objectives:

  • Enabling the Palestinian public to identify incitement and understand its negative impact

  • Stimulating discussion on incitement and analyzing ways to address it

The issue of incitement is so frequently raised in the Palestinian context that Ma'an decided to produce a television series analyzing the topic in depth and to offer training regarding incitement for media personnel. The training focused on the moderation skills necessary to facilitate talk shows and respectful discussions, as well as technical aspects of production.

Each one-hour program included roundtable discussions with experts including educators, government representatives, journalists, and social workers who addressed the realities of incitement in school textbooks, media and government institutions. The programs also featured ‘on-the-street’ interviews with Palestinian citizens, as a means of interacting directly with the target audience and injecting grassroots opinion and feedback.

Results:

  • Production and broadcast of a 13-episode TV series around the theme of reframing incitement.
