Hostile Environment Awareness Training for Palestinian Media Professionals from the Gaza Strip

Period: May 2009 - August 2009 

Objectives:

This project contributed to the development of safer working conditions for the Palestinian media in Gaza, by enhancing the awareness and skills of media professionals and organisations regarding safety issues, and providing them with protective equipment. Ultimately, the project is a step towards strengthening freedom of expression and the ability of local media and journalists to work in Gaza.


Results:

Journalist safety training was provided to Palestinian media professionals from the Gaza Strip in two phases: the first over two days for 38 journalists on stress management and first aid in Gaza, the second in Egypt over 4 days for 35 journalists on topics including in mine awareness, vehicle checkpoint procedures, abduction, and medical scenarios(facilitated by  security company TOR International).    The training was highly successful according to participants’ and trainers’ evaluation feedback.
