Empowering Transparency through Effective Secular Media

Period: October 2008 - September 2011

 Objectives:

  • To strengthen independent secular media as a catalyst for governmental accountability and responsiveness in Palestine.
  • Using media to amplify public demands for accountability and facilitate citizen input in governance processes in both the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

The project focuses on investigative and participatory journalism, utilizing television, radio, and online reporting to increase access to information, institutionalize dialogue between Palestinian citizens and decision-makers, and give voice to marginalized groups.

Results:

  • A dedicated Ma'an research unit was established under this project in January 2009. The research unit surveys public needs and attitudes on media and governance, monitors public reaction to our media productions, and evaluates our programming quality and impact.

  • Key outputs include investigative reports on TV, radio and online outlets, enhanced interaction between Palestinian decision-makers and citizens through participation in media programs, and increased responsiveness of decision-makers to citizen demands.
